  • Biography

    Casey Lion, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the divisions of General Pediatrics and Hospital Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and an investigator at the Seattle Children's Research Institute. She is an NIH-funded health services researcher whose work focuses on healthcare equity, language access, patient-provider communication, and health system navigation. In her work, she partners with parents and providers to design interventions to improve healthcare experiences and outcomes for children and families, especially those who use languages other than English for medical care. Her methodological expertise relates to the rigorous evaluation of quality improvement interventions, with a particular focus on QI and healthcare equity. She co-directs the Health Services and Quality of Care Research Fellowship and serves as Program Lead for Patient Navigation within the UW Cancer Consortium's Office of Community Outreach and Engagement. Clinically, she sees patients and supervises residents in the pediatric primary care clinic and on the newborn service at the UW Medical Center.

    She earned her medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and a Masters in Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. She completed her residency and Health Services and Quality of Care Research fellowship at Seattle Children's Hospital and the University of Washington. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Academic Pediatric Association.

    Research Description

    Dr. Lion's NIH-funded research program focuses on the interactions between patient-provider communication, health system navigation, and healthcare equity, with a particular focus on improving care for families that use a language other than English for medical care. In her research, she partners with multidisciplinary stakeholders, including parents and community partners, to design and test interventions aimed at improving healthcare experiences and outcomes for children and families from historically marginalized populations. She has additional methodologic expertise related to QI research methods and the effect of QI on health equity.
