ENCORE Lab

The Equity, Navigation, Communication, and healthcare Outcomes REsearch (ENCORE) lab is an NIH-funded research lab founded by Dr. Casey Lion that aims to achieve equitable healthcare outcomes for children from historically marginalized populations, including those with minority race and ethnicity, low income and those who use a language other than English for medical care. Our research aims to improve patient-provider communication, health system navigation, language access and healthcare equity.

Children from families who are part of historically marginalized groups are an expanding population in the United States. However, we still face challenges in providing high-quality and equitable care. We aim to partner with these populations to improve their experiences and outcomes of medical care, with an eye to co-developing and testing interventions that are scalable and adaptable.

Healthcare disparities remain persistent despite decades of work to address them. While the long-term effort to dismantle the institutionalized racism within our healthcare system and society at large continues, there is an urgent need in the interim for effective, patient-centered interventions to support children and families in achieving equitable experiences and outcomes across healthcare settings.
