What is the goal of this study?

Lobectomy and hemispherectomy are surgeries that involve removal of part of the brain for treatment of epilepsy. During either procedure, part of the removed brain tissue is discarded.

Researchers aim to collect a small piece of the tissue that would normally be discarded and share it with the Allen Institute. The goal of this research study is to learn more about the brain, its cells, its circuits and how everything works together. We hope to use this information to better understand the process of brain disorders, which may benefit others in the future.

Who can join the study?

This study may be a good fit for patients who:

Are 18 years of age or under
Are undergoing lobectomy or hemispherectomy for epilepsy

What will happen if my child takes part in this study?

If you choose to participate in this study, researchers will collect a small piece of the brain tissue that would normally be discarded during your child's procedure. Our team will give the tissue to the Allen Institute team and provide them with a bit of information about your child (i.e. sex, seizure medications, diagnoses, surgical procedures).

Information shared with the Allen Institute would NOT contain any patient identifiers, such as your child's name or date of birth. Your participation would conclude once child's surgery is complete.
